Extracts from an interview conducted by Dr. Mary Tremblay for research into the experiences of persons with spinal care injuries in the 1940s and 1950s. She interviewed Dr. E.H. (Harry) Botterell on August 10 1993. Dr. Botterell was a neurosurgeon and the Canadian originator of the modern protocols for treatment of patients with spinal care injury. He began developing the protocols in the 1930s in working with three patients and perfected it during the Second World War at the Canadian war hospital at Basingstoke, England. In the interview Dr. Botterell recounts the changes that had to be made in the attitudes of the medical establishment to ensure patients with spinal care injuries received modern treatment.
